The Vasco Da Gama Garden is across from the Royal Hotel, and on the way to Guia park. A decent place to stop and rest if you are in the area.
For the first picture, with the maroon building in the background, it seems like there was something significant about that building. But, of course now I can't remember what it was. I'll try to remember to check next time I am in the area.
